The Jan Joosten Family Study project (previously identified as "Family of New Netherland Immigrant Ancestor - Jan Joosten") is intended to help his descendants be better stewards of his family's WikiTree profiles. Jan Joosten brought his family to New Netherland from Amsterdam in 1662. He is the immigrant ancestor of this line and a New Netherland Settler.

Jan Joosten van Meteren migrated from Amsterdam to New Netherland in 1662 aboard the d'Vos with his wife and five children.

What's in a Name

Jan Joosten van Meteren (means John, son of Justus, from Meteren)^[1]

Jan Joosten probably did not use van Meteren as a surname before coming to America, if then. A transcript of the passenger list for d’Vos listed him as Jan Joosten from “Tielderweert.” Meteren was “a village (sometimes called Meeteren), in Tielerwaard.”^[2]

Van Meteren-8 is being used for his WikiTree profile ID. The following variations were referenced or used by merged profiles:

Jan Joosten’s profile includes the New Netherland Settlers Project template, which shows him as belonging to a New Netherland family, and his profile has been designated a “Project Protected Profile.” This means that duplicate profiles should be merged into Van Meteren-8; the Project Protected status prevents Van_Meteren-8 from being merged into another Jan Joosten’s profile.

Be sure to tag the posting new_netherland as well as the current ID (without the number) and your preference (use an underscore for a space; capitalization does not matter in tags) – e.g., for Van_Meteren-8, your tags would be new_netherland, van_meteren, (your_preference)

If you find a lower number, for example, Van_Meteren-10 is a Project Protected Profile, but you find a duplicate profile with the ID Van_Meteren-9, please notify the project leader or other supervisor before proposing a merge so that the Project Protected status can be changed to the lower-numbered ID.^[4]

Update July 21, 2015. Jan's descendants under the NNS project have mostly been "grandfathered" in to the NNS category that lists profiles that have been through the NNS Approval System for LNAB (click the preceding links for more info about the category & system). update 2020: the NNS category is no more, and the NNS Project requested that the LNAB be changed to "Janz" (see this comment), which was done 18 March 2020.

Update December 19, 2016. The NNS Project is phasing out many categories, to include removing the Project Collateral Category and others that were used to protect profiles under the NNS project. Any profile that is project-protected must show the project that it is under.
